NAGA CITY — Graduate students of Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) across various programs gained valuable insights into the proper validation of research instruments during a face-to-face session on Instrument Validation held on 5 September 2026, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Library Multipurpose Room.

The orientation was conducted for students enrolled in Thesis and Dissertation Writing and featured Dr. Roland Elicay as the resource speaker. The session aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of the processes involved in establishing the validity of research instruments and preparing them for the data-gathering stage of their respective studies.
Dr. Elicay discussed the importance of gathering appropriate evidence to support the validity of research instruments developed by researchers. He emphasized that instrument validation is an essential component of the research process, as it helps ensure that the tools used in a study accurately measure the concepts, variables, or constructs they are intended to measure.

A key focus of the discussion was content validation, which involves carefully examining the content and coverage of an instrument with the assistance of experts or stakeholders knowledgeable in the field. Through this process, researchers are able to determine whether the items included in their instruments are relevant, appropriate, and sufficiently representative of the subject being investigated.
The session also provided graduate students with guidance on the importance of seeking informed evaluation and feedback during the development and refinement of their research instruments. Such inputs enable researchers to identify potential gaps, unclear items, or areas that need revision before proceeding with actual data collection.
The activity underscores AdNU’s continuing commitment to supporting graduate students in their research endeavors and equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake rigorous, relevant, and credible scholarly work.
