Ateneo Graduate School Holds Workshop on Basic Group Facilitation Methods

The Ateneo Graduate School, led by its Dean, Dr. Malu C. Barcillano, successfully concluded a two-day training workshop on Technology of Participation (ToP) Level 1: Basic Group Facilitation Methods at the Ateneo de Naga University on August 25-26, 2026. The training equips future administrative leaders–including Master in Public Administration (MPA) students and some members of the Ateneo Personnel Club–with practical workshop facilitation skills they can use in their respective offices and organizations.

Dr. Barcillano opened the training by contrasting traditional, top-down leadership with a facilitative style. She emphasized that facilitative leadership drives meaningful organizational growth by anchoring itself on six foundational values: participation, teamwork, creativity, consensus, reflection, and action.

Throughout the two-day event, participants moved from theory to hands-on practice, working through three core ToP methods: Discussion Method, Workshop Method, and Action Planning Method. After each module, attendees took turns role-playing as facilitators. Participants received real-time constructive feedback from the trainer and their peers, highlighting key strengths and pinpointing practical areas for growth.

The collaborative spirit and generous sharing of ideas among participants from different government and private sectors made the experience both educational and engaging.

The ToP1 training serves as a key stepping stone for first-year MPA students currently enrolled in MMPA214 (Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Systems Analysis). The techniques learned will directly apply to upcoming fieldwork, where students will collaborate with Local Government Units (LGUs) to facilitate the Barangay Participatory Planning and Budgeting Workshop (BPPBW) in two selected barangays in Camarines Sur.

By facilitating inclusive planning sessions for the Barangay Development Council (BDC), students ensure local community voices directly shape local decisions. Their combined expertise in planning, budgeting, and facilitation will empower local councils to independently draft their Annual Investment Plans (AIP) for years to come.
