ADNU Graduate School Empowers Residents Through Cardiovascular Health Education

In a remote barangay where access to preventive healthcare remains a daily challenge, a simple blood pressure reading became more than a routine health assessment. It became a symbol of empowerment, hope, and a renewed commitment to protecting lives. Through an initiative that combined health education, clinical expertise, and community partnership, graduate nursing students from Ateneo de Naga University brought cardiovascular care directly to the people who needed it most, transforming a morning of service into a lasting investment in community health.

On July 19, 2026, graduate students from the Master of Arts in Nursing and Master in Nursing programs of Ateneo de Naga University, under NSG 706: Principles and Methods of Comprehensive Nursing, conducted the service-learning activity titled Healthy Hearts, Aware Communities: Interactive Workshop Seminar on Assessing Cardiovascular Risk and Spotting the Red Flags at Barangay Cagliliog, Tinambac, Camarines Sur. Held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the initiative gathered 32 participants composed of 25 senior citizens and seven selected community representatives from the barangay’s different zones, reaffirming the university’s commitment to extending quality healthcare and health education to underserved communities.

Organized by the graduate nursing students under the guidance of course professor Dr. France T. Caayao and activity heads Kim S. Amado, RN, and Jasmin C. Galan, RN, RM, the program was anchored on the Ignatian values of cura personalis and compassionate service. Recognizing that cardiovascular diseases remain among the leading causes of illness and death, particularly among older adults living in geographically isolated communities, the organizers sought to bridge healthcare gaps by delivering accessible health education, cardiovascular risk assessment, and practical wellness interventions directly within the barangay.

vulnerability to cardiovascular diseases brought about by age-related physiological changes, limited awareness of critical warning signs such as stroke and heart attack symptoms, and restricted access to preventive healthcare services due to distance from tertiary medical facilities. By bringing health promotion activities and risk assessment services to the Barangay Health Station, the graduate students transformed preventive healthcare into a community-centered experience that emphasized early detection, informed decision-making, and timely referral for medical care.

Throughout the seminar-workshop, participants engaged in interactive discussions designed to improve their understanding of hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors, medication adherence, nutrition, lifestyle modification, and early symptom recognition. The program emphasized that many cardiovascular emergencies can be prevented through routine monitoring, healthy lifestyle choices, and immediate recognition of warning signs. Participants were encouraged to become active partners in safeguarding their own health rather than passive recipients of healthcare services.

The educational sessions were delivered by registered nurses with expertise in cardiovascular health. During the first session, Mark Solano, RN, discussed the fundamentals of blood pressure monitoring, proper blood pressure assessment techniques, preventive strategies against hypertension, and practical measures for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. The second session, facilitated by Florabel Madera-Pintucan, RN, focused on the importance of consistent adherence to antihypertensive medications, practical strategies to improve medication compliance, and comprehensive discussions on stroke, including its warning signs, preventive measures, and rapid assessment techniques that could potentially save lives during emergencies.

A defining feature of the service-learning activity was its emphasis on sustainability through community empowerment. Rather than limiting the intervention to a one-time educational seminar, the organizers conducted a hands-on blood pressure monitoring workshop for seven selected representatives from the barangay’s different zones. Equipped with practical skills in proper blood pressure assessment, these community representatives are expected to serve as local health advocates capable of assisting fellow residents in routine monitoring and promoting cardiovascular awareness within their respective neighborhoods. This strategy strengthens the community’s capacity to sustain preventive health practices long after the activity has concluded.

The activity concluded with an open forum where participants raised questions regarding cardiovascular disease prevention and management, followed by the awarding of certificates and tokens of appreciation. The organizers also coordinated with the barangay health team to facilitate continued monitoring and appropriate referral of participants requiring further medical attention, reinforcing the continuity of care beyond the duration of the workshop.

More than fulfilling an academic requirement, Healthy Hearts, Aware Communities exemplified how service-learning can meaningfully connect advanced nursing education with real community needs. By integrating evidence-based health education, preventive screening, and community capacity-building, the graduate nursing students demonstrated that healthcare extends beyond hospital walls. Their initiative empowered older adults to recognize cardiovascular warning signs, encouraged healthier lifestyle practices, and cultivated a network of local health advocates committed to promoting cardiovascular wellness. In doing so, the program not only strengthened the health literacy of Barangay Cagliliog but also embodied Ateneo de Naga University’s mission to form healthcare leaders who guide with competence, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to serving marginalized communities.
