GARCHITORENA, Camarines Sur — Portuguese volunteers Miguel Silva Santos, an engineer and Elena Asensio Amaral, a medical doctor, began their month-long community immersion and volunteer service in the Municipality of Garchitorena on  6 July 2026, embarking on an initiative that promotes cultural exchange, local collaboration, and community engagement.

As part of their continuing commitment to volunteerism, the couple has traveled to different countries to work alongside local communities through immersion and service. During their stay in Garchitorena, they will live within the community, gain a deeper understanding of local realities and Filipino culture in the Bicol context, and contribute to initiatives identified in partnership with the local community members.  One of the key objectives of their visit is to help improve access to neonatal care in resource-limited communities. In collaboration with the Spanish non-government organization INCUNEST, Miguel and Elena have introduced to recipient communities a low-cost incubator designed to improve the survival of newborns.

On their first day, they met with healthcare personnel at the Garchitorena Medicare Community Hospital to present the initiative and discuss its potential application within the municipality. This endeavor highlights the role of international volunteerism in fostering collaboration between communities across borders. By creating opportunities for shared learning and service, volunteer exchanges such as this contribute to building lasting international relationships grounded in solidarity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to community development.
