ADNU-Graduate School Conducts Symposium on Scarcity and Poverty

The Graduate School of Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), through its MAED Social  Studies program, successfully conducted a symposium titled “Choices, Chances, and Consequences:  How Scarcity and Poverty Shape Everyday Decisions” on March 6, 2026, at 1 PM at Libon Agro Industrial High School, Albay.

The event gathered Senior High School Alternative Learning System (ALS) students, aiming to deepen their understanding of economic realities and how limited resources influence daily decision-making.  The symposium served as an avenue for learners to connect theoretical concepts in Economics with real-life situations, particularly in the context of poverty and scarcity.

The activity was guided by Dr. Rosario Felix, a respected professor in Economics at ADNU. She emphasized the importance of critical thinking in making informed choices despite constraints, encouraging students to reflect on their personal and community experiences.

The speakers Jasmine Melody R. Nañez and Kyla Faye C. Metran, both from the MAED Social Studies class, facilitated engaging discussions and interactive segments that allowed participants to share insights and experiences. Their presentations highlighted practical examples of how individuals navigate limited opportunities and the consequences of economic decisions. Mr. Edward Paul D.  Castro also facilitated the icebreaker, which was actively participated in by the ALS Learners.

The success of the symposium was made possible through the support of the ADNU Graduate School, under the leadership of Dr. Malu Barcillano. The organizers, headed by Justice Doroteo C. Valenciano, also extended their gratitude to the administration of Libon Agro-Industrial High School, led by Mrs. Virginia Reynancia, Principal II, and Mrs. Salve V. Cedo, Assistant Principal II, together with the teaching and non-teaching staff, for their warm accommodation and cooperation.

Special recognition was also given to ALS teachers Mrs. Suzette Braga Samuela-Nicomedes and Mrs.  Maribel Gomez, along with all Senior High School ALS educators, for their invaluable assistance and guidance throughout the activity.

The organizers expressed their appreciation to all ALS learners who actively participated in the symposium, making the event both meaningful and impactful.

Anchored on the Jesuit principle Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (“For the Greater Glory of God”), the initiative reflects ADNU’s continued commitment to holistic education and community engagement, particularly among underserved sectors.
