Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), through its Office of Student Affairs, reaffirmed its commitment to safe, ethical, and inclusive campus environments by hosting the 2025 Bicol Orientation and Training on Student Affairs and Services (BOAT-SAS) on October 9–10. Organized in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office V (CHEDROV) and the Bicol Council of Deans and Directors of Student Affairs and Services (BCODDSAS), the event brought together student affairs professionals and key education stakeholders from across the Bicol Region.
This marked the second time ADNU hosted the regional training, the first being in 2023. Its continued involvement reflects the university’s ongoing efforts to support student services and contribute to improved practices in higher education.
With the theme “From Policy to Practice: Cultivating Safe, Ethical & Inclusive Spaces for All,” the two-day event welcomed 157 student affairs professionals and student leaders from 64 higher education institutions. The program featured keynote talks, workshop sessions, and the sharing of institutional experiences, offering participants opportunities to learn from one another and strengthen their student support systems.
The event officially opened with a message from Naga City Mayor Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, who urged Student Affairs and Services (SAS) practitioners to actively engage students in decision-making processes, emphasizing that initiatives should be measured by their outcomes and real-world impact, rather than by statistics alone.
Continuing the program, Dr. Pamela Sorra-Viñas of CHEDROV presented updates on student affairs policies and emphasized the responsibilities of higher education institutions in ensuring student safety and well-being. Her presentation provided a valuable policy framework that guided later sessions.
To further support these insights, Atty. Hilario Caraan of De La Salle University discussed recent developments in laws related to harassment, child protection, and bullying. His session offered practical guidance on institutional compliance and the legal aspects of student protection. Rodolfo “Sonny” Virtus Jr. of ADNU, also serving as BCODDSAS president, shared practical strategies for promoting professionalism and respect in student-personnel interactions. He also discussed approaches to addressing incidents of discrimination and harassment in ways that are supportive, sensitive, and confidential.
These insights were complemented by presentations from various institutions, which showcased programs that support specific student populations, manage off-campus activities, and strengthen student organizations.
To close the training, participants engaged in interactive workshops designed to encourage reflection, peer discussion, and strategic planning. These sessions enabled attendees to identify concrete steps for enhancing their respective campus policies and support services.
