Graduate School Faculty and Students Present Research at International Conference

Dr. Jesus Cyril Conde, Dr. Virna Villanueva, and Dr. Lorleine Manauis, led their students in presenting their research papers in the Language and Literature International Conference (LLICON), organized by the Bicol Association of Language and Literature Teachers (BALLT) and Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, held last September 4-6, 2025, at the Ateneo de Naga University. The conference’s theme, Language, Literature, and History: Interfacing Past Paradigms and Emerging Trends Toward Future-Driven and Interdisciplinary Scholarship and Pedagogies, provided a venue for different scholars, educators, and students across language, literature, history, and culture disciplines to showcase their research on various topics.

Dr. Virna Villanueva, along with her students, Apple Jane Tagum and Faina Rose Casimiro, from the Doctor of Philosophy in Language and Literacy Development (PhD LLD) program, presented the paper, Navigating Personal Blogs: An Analysis of Language and Societal Norms in Digital Narratives. Maria Cecelia Dy and Rialyn Dogcol from the PhD LLD program also presented their papers. Ms. Dy discussed her bridging paper, Translanguaging Practices in the Philippines: Examining the Strategies, Benefits, and Challenges in Language Classrooms, while Ms. Dogcol discussed a published journal article, How Visible is the Rainbow Flag? LGBT Representation in Philippine TV Commercials and Online Advertisements. Dr. Villanueva served as adviser and co-author of the papers presented.

Dr. Jesus Cyril Conde, along with his students from the Master in Language and Literature program, also presented their papers. Dr. Conde and Patricia Mae Elopre discussed the paper, Colonial Discourse in Istoryang Suanoy Oral Narrative Tradition from Mt. Asog, Camarines Sur.  Another paper with Dr. Conde as co-author and presenter, Rhizomes of Food and Supernatural Beliefs as Deterritorialization of Mayon Volcano Eruption History in Merlinda Bobis’ Banana Heart Summer, was presented by Jamille Barrameda and Agatha Christine Barachina.

Dr. Lorleine Manuis, along with her former student Expedito Ramos Jr., who recently completed his degree in Master of Arts in Education major in Social Studies, also presented their paper, A Soldier of Forgotten War: The Untold Story of PVT Alipio S. Secillano.

Other students from the PhD LLD program also presented their papers. Cindy Grace Villanueva discussed her paper, Functions of Selected Legends in Tagkawayan, Quezon while Reashiela Lucena Khan discussed the paper, Exclusion Strategies in the Representation of Social Actors in Theft-Related Police Blotters.

The Graduate School also served as one of the strategic partners of BALLT in the LLICON conference. As a strategic partner, the Graduate School office hopes to continuously strengthen its partnerships and collaborations with professional and civic organizations to provide scholars, educators, and students with various multicultural and multilingual backgrounds a venue for dialogues, panel discussions, and research presentations.
