OrSem and Students’ Assembly 2025: Ang Pagpoon, Launching Your Graduate School Journey

The Ateneo de Naga University-Graduate School welcomed its graduate community in a gathering that combined essential orientation with renewed commitment to formation and academic excellence. Held under the theme “Ang Pagpoon: Launching Your Graduate School Journey,” held on August 23, 2025, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon  at the Alingal Multipurpose Hall, 5th floor of the Alingal Building where the event brought together new and continuing students for an integrated program of policy briefings, program-specific guidance, and student organization.

The activity opened with a short welcome from Dr. Malu C. Barcillano, Dean of the Graduate School. Program directors then led focused discussions to ensure students understand the academic standards and support systems available to them. Dr. Virna S. Villanueva addressed policies on class attendance, grading, and the guidelines for thesis and dissertation defenses. Dr. Ronaldo S.P. Elicay outlined residency requirements and procedures for leave of absence. Dr. Elizaldy Z. Raro discussed the conduct and expectations of the written comprehensive examinations, while Dr. Emma Intia spoke on the objectives and implementation of Service-Learning Activities that link scholarship with community engagement. Dr. Penafrancia Olayon-Reyta explained the role of the Graduate School Standards Committee in upholding academic quality.

Following the plenary, students moved into their academic clusters for targeted orientations with their program directors and classmates. These smaller sessions provided time for clarifying program expectations, building camaraderie with their peers, and addressing concerns specific to each field of study. Each cluster also elected officers who will represent their cohorts and help coordinate communication and activities with the Graduate School administration.

The OrSem and Students’ Assembly served not only to communicate policies but also to strengthen the sense of community among students and faculty. Participants left with clearer guidance on academic requirements and a shared resolve to pursue their studies with integrity, engagement, and purpose—hallmarks of the Ateneo graduate formation.
