The Ateneo de Naga University – Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research (INECAR) conducted a seminar workshop on Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) on December 14, 2024, at the Ateneo Main Campus covered courts. The event was attended by 67 utility and janitorial personnel from Velocity Care Agency, assigned to ADNU, and 21 owners and representatives of food concessionaires operating within the university.

The workshop aimed to enhance the participants’ understanding of proper waste segregation and management, in line with the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its efforts to support the city’s waste management initiatives.

Maricris Perez and Anthony Raphael Castro from the Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO) of the Naga City Local Government Unit served as resource speakers. They discussed key topics, including the different categories of solid waste, the process of conducting WACS, and relevant laws and ordinances governing waste management, including penalties for non-compliance. Their presentations provided a strong legal and practical foundation for the participants, highlighting the importance of adhering to proper waste management practices.

The workshop featured a hands-on activity where participants were divided into five groups and tasked with categorizing mixed waste images into four distinct categories. This exercise, facilitated by Shiela Racadag and assisted by Jackielyn Hisita and Jocelyn Inocencio from SWMO, allowed attendees to apply their knowledge in a collaborative setting. Mr. Castro evaluated the group outputs to ensure comprehension of the topics discussed. The participative format of the workshop not only deepened participants’ understanding but also encouraged active engagement.

During the open forum, one of the concessionaire representatives expressed gratitude for the workshop, describing it as a valuable opportunity to refresh her knowledge of waste segregation and apply newly learned concepts in her daily operations.

This initiative aligns with the directive of the university president to observe proper waste management within the campus and supports the university’s contribution to extending the lifespan of Naga City’s sanitary landfill.
