Two researchers from Ateneo de Naga University’s Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research (INECAR) represented the school at the 5th Colleges and Universities Public Service Conference (CUPSCON) held on August 28-30, 2024 at Palawan State University. One of the papers presented by INECAR was also included in the list of 12 Best Paper Presentations (from among the 200 submissions from academic institutions across the country).
The conference theme “The Future of Public Service in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Trends, Challenges, and Prospects,” featured pioneering research and initiatives aimed at addressing contemporary societal challenges in public service through innovation and collaboration. Out of the many submissions, two papers from ADNU-INECAR were selected for presentation. Jay P. Abawag presented the “Utilization of Open Dashboards and Tools for COVID-19 Monitoring,” which highlighted how open-source technologies facilitated real-time collaboration among stakeholders during the pandemic. This initiative demonstrated how the use of open dashboards and tools empowered the local government and its health department to effectively monitor and manage COVID-19 cases in Naga City. The presentation emphasized the role of technology in fostering transparency, collaboration among the different stakeholders, and enhancing public health responses during crises.
Shane B. Bimeda, meanwhile, delivered a presentation on her research “Trees in the City Project: Urban Tree Mapping through Citizen Science,” and was recognised as one of the 12 Best Paper Presentations. Her study underscored the importance of citizen engagement in environmental conservation, particularly in urban settings. By mobilizing volunteers to map trees in public spaces across Naga City, the project generated essential and crucial baseline data on urban greenery, providing a valuable resource for urban planners, environmental authorities, and researchers working towards a more sustainable and livable city.
Both Mr. Abawag and Ms. Bimeda attended the conference with the support of the Ateneo de Naga University’s Faculty and Staff Development Program, which funded their participation.
Their contributions reflect the commitment of ADNU-INECAR to public service and sustainability, aligning with the broader goals of fostering community involvement, environmental stewardship, and innovative problem-solving in the face of current global challenges.
