7th Annual Fr James OBrien SJ Memorial Lecture Series

The James O’Brien S.J. Library, College of Business and Accountancy, Graduate School, and the AdeN High School Class ’66 will conduct a lecture in commemoration of the legacy of Fr. James O’Brien, S.J. on September 20, 2023, at 9:00 am at the Richie Fernando Hall.

The theme for this year’s lecture is The Bicol Rural Economy: The Challenges of Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, and Social Development. The talk will focus on the Bicol region’s rural economy since Bicol is heavily dependent on agriculture, characterized by low incomes, limited access to resources, and a lack of infrastructure. Also, to examine several challenges for the rural economy, including the need for promoting agricultural productivity, entrepreneurship, and social development. The target audience of this lecture is students, faculty & staff, librarians, and other interested participants in the Bicol Region.

We have invited Mr. Ronald “Bong” Rodriguez as the Resource Speaker. Mr. Rodriquez is an alumnus of this university and an Entrepreneur, a co-founder of several NGOs, and president of the Group Initiatives for Better Opportunities (GIBO), General Manager of Marhay na Gibo Consumers Cooperative (MNGCC). Our panel of reactors is Mr. Ernesto E. Asence, III., an Agriculture Technologist in the City Government of Naga, Mr. Carlo B. Buenaflor, Chief Executive Officer of Biggs, Inc., and Ms. Frances Michelle C. Nubla, Research Associate of Ateneo Social Science Research Center. At the end of the lecture, the reactors will share their insights and perspectives on the topic presented. Their input will further enrich the discussion and provide a well-rounded view of the challenges and opportunities within the Bicol rural economy.

In this light, we would like to invite students, faculty, and staff to attend the lecture. Complimentary snacks will be served after the activity for onsite participants.
