The Ateneo de Naga University, through the Graduate School, Department of Social Sciences, Center for Local Governance, and in coordination with the Office of Student Affairs, conducted a Webinar on Philippine Presidential Elections entitled “E-Leksyon 2022- Understanding Philippine Presidential Elections: Issues and Outlook” last January 21, 2022, from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon via ZOOM Cloud Meetings and Facebook Live streaming.

Prof. Julio C. Teehankee, Philippine Representative for the Council of the International Political Science Association, Full Professor and Research Fellow of De La Salle University, led the webinar and presented his insightful discussion on Philippine Presidential Elections.

In his presentation and discussion, Dr. Teehankee highlighted the Philippine Presidential Elections. He underscored that “political strategists” treat the electorate as a consumer market that can be segmented and targeted. The candidates use the “Push and Pull” narratives to gain votes through political machinery, social media platforms, and popularity. Further, Prof. Teehankee shared his view on the nearing 2022 Presidential Elections, both peculiar and crucial. Peculiar because no official administration candidate will run in the May election, and crucial because this year is the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, and the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos is aiming to return to the Malacañan seat. Out of 65.7 million voters in the country, 31.41 million are part of “youth votes,” and they can be instrumental in changing the course of the national election. He ended his discussion by telling the youth audience that “the future depends on you.”
The following were the reactors who shared their reflections and insights on the presentation and discussion made by the resource speaker: Ms. Mary Joyce Bulao, MA, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Department, Mr. Wilfredo Prilles, Jr., a Coordinator from the City Planning and Development Office of LGU Naga, and also a faculty member of ADNU Graduate School, and; Ms. Ellaine Jo Cabiles, a 3rd year AB Political Science student.

Dr. Marshal Q. Murillo, Deputy Director of Center for Local Governance moderated the webinar. A total of 872 registered participants actively participated in the webinar. At the same time, there were other attendees from both public and private institutions who watched the online event through FB live streaming.
