Construction of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall
As you may recall from previous memos sharing the highlights of the most recent meetings of the Board of Trustees, plans are underway to renovate the university’s oldest structure. The approvals from the Society of Jesus have been secured, and as announced in recent days, the Henry Sy Foundation has committed to being the anchor donor for the project. The bidding process has now started to identify a suitable contractor for the project.
The oldest structure in the university dates back to 1940 and originally housed the chapel, administrative offices, and classrooms. The facade with the iconic four pillars was made of concrete and still stands today as a heritage structure; it will be retained and only the structures behind it will be rebuilt. The present administration building is a U-shaped wooden structure facing the St. Ignatius Park, the central axis of the campus. This structure, with one wing already torn down years ago, will be rebuilt in concrete.
The horizontal wing behind the facade will continue to have only two floors, to preserve the sight line of the four pillars. The two vertical wings will each have three floors. The administration building will house the offices of the President, Vice-President for Higher Education, Treasurer, Human Resources, Quality Assurance, Internal Audit and Risk Management, Social Concern, Internationalization Programs, Mission and Identity, Psychological Services, Testing Center, and Guidance Office, just to name a few. There will also be classrooms to accommodate more classes.
Construction will be done in phases over two years, starting with the two vertical wings. The groundbreaking rites are scheduled for October 2025. Just like the original structure, the buildings will be built on an elevation of about three feet to protect against flooding. Solar panels will be installed on the roof to provide renewable energy to the campus.
We are very grateful to the Henry Sy Foundation and to the alumni and donors who have pledged their financial support to sponsor specific facilities in the new building. Among them are Mr Monico Jacob (HS ‘61), Mr Rico Brizuela (HS ‘62), Ms Angela Nagrampa (College ‘71), the High School Classes of 1963, 1966, 1969, and Mr Joseph N. Dy.
We need help to complete the required amount to finish the building, and will appreciate any leads that community members can provide. For inquiries, please contact my Administrative Assistant, Mr Aaron Infeliz, through phone (881-4102) or email (ainfeliz@gbox.adnu.edu.ph).
