ANGELO “BOBOY” SILERIO SJ, +RIP

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Fr. Angelo “Boboy” Silerio, SJ, OIC-Principal of the Ateneo de Naga Junior High School.  The official announcement from the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus gives us the details of his death on Tuesday morning, 30 April 2019:

“He had been staying briefly at the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center, while undergoing treatment for a neck problem, hypertension, and other ailments.  Fr. Boboy seems to have suffered cerebral bleeding causing a sudden seizure and collapse.  Rushed to the hospital, he could not be revived.  Fr. Boboy, 46, entered the Society on 30 May 1995 and was ordained to the presbyterate on 8 April 2006.”

As a priest, Fr. Boboy was first assigned to the Bukidnon Mission, as parochial vicar of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Parish and Director of the Fr. Leoni Memorial High School.  After a year of mission work in Myanmar, he moved on to graduate studies in anthropology and environmental science, while doing various ministries at the Ateneo de Manila University.  In 2015 he was assigned here in Ateneo de Naga for chaplaincy and administrative duties.  Just recently he received a new posting to the Jesuit Mission in Caloocan, where he was preparing to move during the second semester of the coming school year.

The wake for Fr. Boboy began in Loyola House of Studies, Ateneo de Manila on Wednesday, May 1.  After the wake mass on Thursday evening, May 2, the body will be brought to Naga.  I shall be going to Manila to accompany Fr. Boboy’s remains back here, and we expect to have his body in the University Church of Christ the King by Friday morning, May 3.

There will be wake masses in our University Church at 7:00 p.m. from Thursday, May 2 (before the body arrives) until Saturday, May 4.  Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona, OCD, DD will preside at the first wake mass on May 2.  A necrological service will be held after the final wake mass on May 4.  Fr. Provincial Primitivo Viray Jr., SJ will preside at the funeral mass in the University Church on Sunday, May 5, 4:00 p.m.  The burial follows immediately after the funeral mass, at the Jesuit cemetery in front of St. Ignatius Residence.

Just as Fr. Boboy was always available for the needs of our community, as one family let us come together during the wake masses and funeral services, to welcome Fr. Boboy home and to bid him goodbye.  Let us continue to pray for Fr. Boboy’s repose and for the consolation of his family.  +Requiescat in Pace.

Fr. Roberto E. N. Rivera, SJ [President, Ateneo de Naga University]
