Responding to the Call: AdNU Conducts Relief Operations to the Victims of Typhoon Nona

Typhoon Nona ravaged Sorsogon last December 2015. One hundred seventy five kilometers per hour winds toppled houses and some parts of the province were flooded. According to the Severe Weather Bulletin #18 of PAGASA, issued at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, 16 December 2015, a 4-meter storm surge also engulfed the coastal areas of Sorsogon as the typhoon hit landmass, leaving damages amounting to 8.52 billion pesos. 28,761 families also lost their homes.

Immediately after the typhoon’s aftermath, the Ateneo de Naga University through the Center for Community Development (CCD) facilitated the call for help of the victims of typhoon Nona in Matnog, Sorsogon last December 2015. Donations from Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Ateneo Alumni Association, Inc. (AAAI), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), and the Ateneo de Naga University General Alumni Association (ADNUGAA) donated cash amounting to Php 200,000.00 which were used for the rehabilitation of houses damaged by the typhoon.

Elmer Sto. Domingo Jr. of the CCD visited the area last 22 December 2015 to gather initial information and for ocular visit. Distribution of shelter repair kits was done last 11 January 2016 in coordination and with the assistance of workers from the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Sorsogon headed by Fr. Rowan Gramonte. The donation comprising of nails, coco lumbers, and tarpaulins benefitted 275 families from Barangays Bon-ot Dako and Bon-ot sadit, all in the municipality of Matnog, Sorsogon.
