20 October 2014 — the Center for Community Development delivered relief items donated by various partners in a collective effort to help the displaced families of the imminent eruption of Mayon Volcano in Albay.

The relief operation was headed by the Center for Community Development Director Elmer T. Sto Domingo Jr, together with three staff and student volunteers.  The Social Action Center of the Diocese of Legazpi received the donations and accompanied the team to three evacuation centers in the town of Camalig and Guinobatan.

770 food packs were distributed to the evacuation centers of Barangays Anoling, Guinobatan, Mauraro, and Villa Mercedes in Camalig. The food packs contain milk, sugar, dried fish, monggo beans, and coffee. Cash donations, amounting to a total of 250,000 pesos, were also used to purchase the food items. The team also delivered 100 boxes of Manna fortified rice meals donated by the Missionaries of the Poor.

The month-long Mayon Volcano Crisis has affected 12,857 families according to the latest count of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC). More families will be affected if the Alert Level for the Mayon Volcano rises to level 4. It was on 15 September 2014 when the volcano spewed lava and pyroclastic materials that made the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raise the alert at level 3, forcing the government to evacuate the residents living along the six kilometer permanent radius danger zone.  PHIVOLCS monitoring warns a possible and imminent eruption within weeks.

The Social Action Center of Legaspi headed by Fr. Rex Paul Arjona and the Ateneo de Naga University through CCD expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the generous people who unselfishly shared their time and resources for this cause.
