13 September 2014 — AdNU HS Alumni, Tulong Dunong scholars, and friends all gathered in the university library to celebrate the local launch of A Jesuit Safari, a special anthology of essays and interviews on Fr James O’Brien, SJ.
Fr O’Brien was assigned in AdNU for fourteen years and was very influential to the lives of his students. During his stay in Naga, the famous Irish-American Jesuit priest held a number of initiatives focused on the appreciation and study of Bicol culture. One of his projects was the publication of The Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Bicol People
which was an important collection of various prose, poetry, and songs of the region. When he was assigned to teach in Ateneo de Manila High School, Fr O’Brien started the Tulong Dunong Scholarship Program which, until now, continues to help support public school students.
Jesuit Safari: Essays and Interviews on Fr. James J. O’Brien, S.J. is edited by Emmanuel Velasco, Aries Espinosa, and Noel de Prado. The book is available at the AdNU Textbook Center. Proceeds will go to the Tulong Dunong Foundation Scholarship Program.
