USIC-CLG Conducts Training on Administration of Justice and Promotion of Peace in the Community

At the advent of the first semester for the school year 2014-2015, the University Social Involvement Council (USIC) through the Center for Local Governance (CLG) has again started anew and worked out on another capability-building activity for the Ateneo de Naga University’s partner communities. This activity is in line with the area of Governance, one of USIC’s eight (8) Development Agenda led by Dr. Malu C. Barcillano, the Director CLG and Chair of USIC.

The activity aims to equip local leaders with the skills and knowledge in line with the delivery of their respective functions, thus helping them become more competent as public servants with a sense of integrity and public accountability.

The said training was held last 10-11 July 2014, with trainers, Midel Tanay,  from the Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Science (day one), and Atty. Billie Joy Balbastre from the Department of Allied Business, College of Business and Accountancy (day two). During the first day, Tanay covered the following topics: Katarungang Pambarangay, Lupong Tagapamayapa, Mediation, Concilliation, and Arbitration while Atty. Balbastre delved on the topics Cases Covered by Katarungang Pambaragay, Venue & Jurisdiction, Bill of Rights, and Case Practice.

Hon. Leonardo M. Canaveral, with his eight Brgy. Kagawad, their Brgy. Secretary, and Brgy. Treasurer from Barangay San Nicolas; Hon. Librado B. Banastao Jr., with his six (6) Brgy. Kagawad, and their Brgy. Secretary from Barangay Fundado; and Hon. Bernabe A. Trinidad, with his seven (7) Brgy. Kagawad, their Brgy. Secretary, and Brgy. Treasurer from Barangay San Roque attended the two-day training.

The said activity was facilitated by Jay Abawag, Technical Staff of the Center for Local Governance (CLG) and was assisted by student volunteers from the two co-curricular organizations, namely, Liga ng Estudyante sa Agham Pampulitika (LEAP) and Legal Management Students of Ateneo de Naga University (LMIANS).

All went well and victory was encapsulated by words of appreciation from the participants as the training ended. The USIC and CLG still look forward for the similar training that they will conduct in partnership with the other six partner barangays.
