AREAS OF CONCERN – IP programs revolve around national and international politics. Specific areas which the institute may pursue include the following: responsible national governance, electoral reforms, constitutional reforms, corruption, Asian studies, globalization, global governance, WTO. Services rendered by the institute in these areas include project development, policy research, training, and advocacy.
POLITICS AND CULTURE - This program aims to facilitate the articulation and pursuit of a Bicolano-oriented political culture and development alternatives. At present, this program include the institute’s exploration of alternative political structures that will benefit the region (such as federal and parliamentary forms of government), and an on-going research on indigenous political orientations.
ELECTORAL REFORMS – This program seeks to undertake a systematic and sustainable intervention in the Philippine electoral system. Advocacy programs for electoral reforms, education sessions on electoral politics, and mobilization/constituency-building were among the strategies employed by the program. Among the institute’s recent activities were voters’ education for the 2001 synchronized elections and the 2002 barangay elections, and the demonstration of Botong Pinoy! Computerized Vote-Processing System in Bicol Region.
NATIONAL and GLOBAL GOVERNANCE – A program designed to encourage broader discussion of contemporary developments and issues in the area of national and global governance. It is characterized by the regular conduct of discussions, fora, and symposia. The regular publication of the institute’s ISSUE ALERTS and INTERNATIONAL MONITOR is also incorporated in this program. Moreover, policy research and advocacy is also a major activity.
STUDENT FORMATION PROGRAM – This program is designed specifically to compliment the formation of Ateneans manifesting interest in political analysis and research. The program strategy includes partnership with student groups such as the Political Science majors, REMONTADOS-Ateneo Debate Society, and KATOTOHANAN!-Youth.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – This program aims to enhance the competence of the Political Scientist. Research projects, training and seminar packages, as well as fellowship and travel opportunities will be provided for the faculty of Political Science. This program, at present, takes the form of active participation in and linkage with professional organizations such as the Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA), Association of Social Science Educators, Researchers, and Trainers, Inc. (ASSERT), and the International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO).
