University Lecture Series 2003-2004: National Situation Updates

 

PAMATO 2004 - The Institute of Politics, in coordination with the Ateneo de Naga University's Formation Council, initiated a discussion on the adoption of a university-level framework for electoral intervention. The concept dubbed as " Pagkasararo kan Atenista para sa Malinig asin Matuninong  na Eleksyon (PAMATO2004), was subjected to various core group meeting and plenary discussion among faculty and staff. The general perception is that there is a need for more time to discuss and implement such concept.  The conventional practice of allowing faculty, personnel, and students to get involved depending on their personal context was adapted for this election.

POLITICAL MAPPING - The Institute of Politics took part in the Political Mapping project undertaken by the Philippine Legislators Committee for Population and Development (PLCPD) last April-May 2004. IP serve as the lead institution of the Local Study Team composed of representatives from Women Information and Referral Exchange, Inc. (WIRE), Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP), as well as individuals like Ms. Armi Pe˝a (the Station Manager of radio station DWRB). The initial findings were presented in a press conference held last April 20.

"Divided on Davide" An In-depth Discussion of the Impeachment Case Against  Philippine Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. - To foster greater awareness of the issues behind and implications of the present impeachment move against the Supreme Court Chief Justice Davide, IP and the Supreme Student Government  jointly sponsored the forum which featured the following resource speakers: MR. EDGAR SURTIDA III (Spokesperson of the Philippine Association of Court Employees-PACE), HON. CHO ROCO (Congressman, 2nd District Camarines Sur), ATTY. AVELINO SALES (President, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Cam. Sur), ATTY. JOHN BONGAT (Councilor, Naga City), MR. BEDA PRIELA (Business Professor, Ateneo de Naga University), MR. DAVE BERCASIO (Program Director, Naga City Peoples Council), and MS. EIRENE AGUILA (ADMU Law School, Spokesperson - Stop Impeachment Movement!). 

Party List? A Forum on the Philippine Party List Law Featuring Local  Leaders of Party List Organizations Represented in the   12th Philippine Congress - In cooperation with the Naga City Peoples Council (NCPC), IP sponsored a forum which brought together local leaders of party list organizations represented in the 12th Philippine Congress. Among the participants were: ABA-AKO, ABANSE PINAY, BAYAN MUNA, and COOP-NATTCO. The forum focused on the opportunities and limitations of the present party list law, as well as on the accomplishments of existing party list organizations. Other parties who are set to compete in the 2004 elections also attended the said forum.  

ADNU Political Science Students visit Legislative and Judicial Branches of Government - At least 24 students took part in this year's exposure trip organized by IP. The program, which aims to provide significant exposure for students that will complement their theoretical discussion on various matters, was conducted last 13-15 October 2003. This year's itinerary included a personal audience with the Senate President and the Supreme Court Chief Justice.   

CMFP Launched in Bicol- The Citizens Movement for a Federal Philippines(CMFP) was formally launched in Bicol Region through a simple ceremonies and motorcade in Legaspi City last October 16, 2003.  Mr. Renne Gumba, IP Executive Director, provided the keynote speech for the said affair.  The said launching was followed by a three-day training for CMFP representatives of the various provinces in the region. The launching was also marked by a concert of artists Noel Cabangon and Gary Granada.

2003 National Debate Championship in Naga City - The 5th National Debate Championship was held in the Ateneo de Naga University last October 24-29,1003. This year's NDC, the only one held outside Metro Manila, saw the emergence of Ateneo de Manila University Debate Team as the champion, closely followed by the University of the Philippines-Diliman Team and the University of Sto. Tomas Debate Team. At least two hundred debaters from all over the country participated in the grueling debate competition.

University Lecture Series 2003-2004: National Situation Updates - In cooperation with the Ateneo de Naga University's Office of the Academic Vice-President, IP organized the symposium on national situation updates which featured the lecture delivered by Fr. Archie Intengan, S.J., the Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines. The said lecture, first in the 2003-2004 university lecture series, was well participated by various sectors including other universities in the locality.
