REGIONAL FORUM ON CHARTER CHANGE - The Institute of Politics (IP), Institute for Popular Democracy (IPD), and Akbayan! sponsored a Regional Forum on the Charter Change last 4 December 2002, 8:00 am, at the Villa caceres Hotel, Naga City. The main speaker for the said forum was the IPD Executive Director, Dr. Joel Rocamora. Participants came from the various sectors, as well as from the neighboring provinces of Camarines Sur.
PPSA National Conference 2002 - The Philippine Political Science Association had its National Conference for the year 2002 last November 7-8 in the Holiday Plaza Hotel, Cebu City. The Executive Director of the Institute of Politics attended the said gathering. The keynote speaker in the said conference was the President of the University of the Philippines, himself an astute Political Scientist, Prof. Francisco Nemenzo.
POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS IN CONGRESS- At least eighteen(18) students of the ADNU Political Science Program joined the exposure activity organized by the Institute of Politics last October 7-8, 2002. The group visited the House of Representatives and the Senate wherein they had a private audience with the leaders of both chambers. At the same time, the group did an observational analysis of the Philippine Congress in session. They also visited the University of the Philippines wherein they were cordially received by Prof. Carmencita Aguilar of the UP Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
FED UP? GO FED!- A sequel to the previous discussion of federalism, the Institute of Politics, Naga City Peoples Council, Camarines Sur NGO-PO Council, and the Center for Community Development sponsored the said forum last October. Mr. Soc Banzuela, the Secretary-General of the Citizens Movement for a Federal Philippines (CMFP) was the main speaker in the said forum.
HB 4110 - Mr. Renne F. Gumba, Executive Director of the Institute of Politics, has been invited on various occasions as resource speaker on the controversial bill entitled Reproductive Health Care Act of 2002. The Naga City Peoples Council Women Cluster, the Naga City Women Council, and the PBN TV 5 are some of the organizations which initiated discussion on the said bill. Mr. Gumba was invited in such discussions to provide the objective perspective on the bill, specifically from the point-of-view of the academe.
SAMAHAN PARA SA KINABUKASAN AT KATOTOHANAN FOUNDATION INC. (KATOTOHANAN!) - Naga City received as its visitors the officers of Katotohanan!(Citizens Response) last October 7. Fr. Carmelo Caluag and Amb. Rubio, Chairperson and President respectively of the said organization, visited Naga City for a Discussion on Narco-Politics. The Sangguniang Kabataan and ABC officials, as well as other sectors in the city participated in the said discussion. A strategic plan was eventually drawn for fighting narco-politics in the city. IP serves as the secretariat of the Katotothanan! Naga City Cluster.
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES? - The ADNU Institute of Politics (IP) and the Center for Community Development (CCD) have jointly sponsored a roundtable discussion on the issues and prospects of federalism in the Philippines. The said discussion held last Friday, 23 August 2002, 1:00pm in the ADNU Fernando Hall focused on the salient features of federalism and its implications on the Philippine context. Mr. Renne F. Gumba, the IP Director, provided an input on the fundamentals of federalism. The discussion was enriched by the input from prominent personalities in the federalism movement and from the academe. Among those who attended were Fr. Joel Tabora S.J., president of ADNU and Chairperson of the IP Board of Directors; representatives of the Federal Republic of Bicol Movement, of the Naga City Peoples Council, of Pandayan-Bicol, of the local media, as well as faculty and students of the university.
PHILIPPINE FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH NORTHEAST ASIAN COUNTRIES: ISSUES AND PROSPECTS - The Institute of Politics (IP), Liga ng mga Estudyante sa Agham Pampulitika (LEAP), and the ADNU Department of Social Sciences jointly sponsored the forum on Philippine foreign relations with countries such as Japan, China, and the Koreas. The resource speaker for the said forum is Mr. Ronald Rodriguez, Head of the Northeast Asia Program in the Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies, Foreign Service Institute of the Department of Foreign affairs. Mr. Rodriguez is also an alumnus of the Political Science program of the Ateneo de Naga University. The forum was held last 14 August 2002, 1:00pm, in the Instructional Media Center of the Ateneo de Naga University.
KATOTOHANAN! Youth Leaders Orientation - The Naga City Katotohanan Cluster initiated a dialogue with the leaders of student organizations in the Ateneo de Naga University Campus. The activity included an input on the national situation, an analysis of the local situation, and planning for a campaign against drug abuse and syndicates in the locality. The activity was held last 28 August 2002, 1:00pm, in the Fernando Hall of ADNU. Mr. Ramon Beleno and Ms. Rose Sergio, both members of IP and the local KATOTOHANAN! cluster, facilitated the dialogue.
POLITICAL DISCUSSION SERIES (PDS)- IP has recently launched its Political Discussion Series in the university. In this program, a series of fora and symposia will be launched as part of issue advocacy and consciousness-raising efforts not only in the campus but in the community as well. TESTIMONIAL DINNER FOR ALUMNI- A Grand Reunion and Testimonial Dinner for all the graduates of A.B. Political Science in the Ateneo de Naga University will be held on 24 November 2002. The activity will be jointly sponsored by the Institute of Politics, Department of Social Sciences, Alumni Affairs Office, and the Liga ng mga Estudyante sa Agham Pampulitika (LEAP). REMONTADOS (ADNU DEBATE TEAM)- After an initial consultation with the officers and members of the Ateneo Debate Team, an agreement was made that they will now hold office in the Institute of Politics. IP, in turn, will provide logistical and technical assistance to the team, particularly in their preparations for national and international competitions.
JULY 15 SYNCHRONIZED ELECTIONS- This initiative aims to address the opportunities as well as the challenges posed by the upcoming election for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election. IP works closely with the Center for Community Development, Pillars Publication and the Supreme Student Government.
KATOTOHANAN(Citizens Response)-NAGA CITY CLUSTER- A group of young professionals and students working against the proliferation of the trade and use of prohibited drugs in the locality. The focus is advocacy against "narco-politics". At present, it is working closely with the local government in the establishment of the Life Improvement through Friendly Education (LIFE) Counseling Center, an early intervention approach to the prevention of drug abuse. IP serves as the secretariat of KATOTOHANAN.
SAGIP PAG-IBIG- A coalition of Pag-ibig Fund members opposed to the attachment of the Pag-ibig Fund to the proposed Department of Housing and Urban Development. SAGIP has conducted several protest mobilizations and a continuing issue advocacy against the said move in Congress. IP works with the Secretariat of the coalition.
