HOW DO WE MOVE

  1. Coordination and Direction in the Spirit
The University Social Involvement Council integrates, coordinates, systematizes, and when necessary directs the University’s multi-faceted and multileveled responses to the social situations and need.

  2. Research and Dissemination
Tapping into the expertise and resources of the University for basic or in-depth research on issues taken on by the Council through the pertinent college/s, office/s, or institute/s as drawn from current events, consultation with partner communities, or from the vast information available in the O’Brien Library,  particularly the Knowledge for Development Center.

As a strategy for community empowerment, information generated from research is utilized by the external stakeholders to aid in decision‑making and action on poverty and other social justice issues.

In deciding on specific issues to take on, the Council shall consider the magnitude of its impact on community life and its relevance to the mission and vision of the University.

  3. Issue Advocacy

Concrete/specific recommendations by way of policy proposal, or implementation of programs, projects, or activities on development issues pursued the University through the Council shall be developed and advanced for action by pertinent stakeholders.

Specifically, University statements on social justice issues "which emerge from a systematic process of university deliberation, discernment and decision" as initiated by pertinent college/s, office/s, or institute/s and endorsed by the Council, shall be among the mechanisms to catalyze desired change.

  4. Community Organizing

Building upon the strengths of the community,  and guided by its nature as a source of learning, the University shall, based on community situation analysis undertaken together with stakeholders, facilitate the formulation of community vision of development, set community goals,  formulate and implement strategies which shall be implemented through collaborative and sustained actions by the stakeholders

  5. Implementation of the Roadside Station strategy
The Roadside Station Strategy which has spurred rural development in Japan began as a strategy to spur local tourism. In this strategy, facilities shall be put up along strategic roadsides for purposes of rest, exchange of information, and trade involving local produce to support and encourage local production.  The facility shall be managed by local organization/s and shall be a major point of convergence of the programs and activities undertaken by the Council.

  6. Monitoring and Evaluation

As a strategy for community empowerment, monitoring and evaluation of high-impact development projects, especially those undertaken through bilateral or international cooperation, shall be undertaken by the USIC in close collaboration with the beneficiary community. Information generated as results of monitoring and evaluation shall be utilized for action of the stakeholders.
