The USIC Committee on Socio-Political Education, Advocacy, and Involvement (USIC-CSPEAI), as part of an effort towards continuing political education and social consciousness-raising in the university, will be hosting a weekly roundtable discussion sessions on urgent socio-political issues and concerns. The activity will be conducted 4:30-6:00pm every Tuesday.
The first discussion dubbed “Lessons and Insights from the Maguindanao Experience” was conducted Tuesday, 15 December at the KDC, O’Brien Library. In the said discussion, a presentation was given by Mr. Renne Gumba, Executive Director of the ADNU Institute of Politics. Mr. Gumba provided a background of the Maguindanao massacre, consequent public outcry, the government responses, and the emerging issues.
The presentation was followed by a lively discussion which included reactions to the Maguindanao massacre, questions and clarifications regarding martial law, and suggestions for the next steps that may be taken by the group and the university.
There was also enthusiasm among the participants to continue the activity as a creative, informal mechanism for updates regarding contemporary social issues.
The participants included faculty members from the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Theology. Student leaders included officer and members of the nationally-recognized Remontados (Ateneo Debate Society). Atty. Mila Raquid-Arroyo, Chairperson of the USIC , was also present in the activity.
