University Tree Planting Day
In celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception last December 8, more than 120 college faculty members, staff and students of the Ateneo de Naga University came together once more for a tree planting day, this time in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Buhi, a priority area of the University Social Involvement Council. They were joined by volunteers from the local government of Buhi headed by its Committee Chair on Environment, Councilor Edwin Salvamante.
The people of Buhi welcomed the volunteers with a short program prepared in the municipal covered courts. Here, they were also oriented by INECAR’s Janjan Caceres on the importance of tree planting especially on the watershed areas such as Lake Buhi.
To get to the actual site, the vol unteers had to take a 15-minute boat ride followed by a 20-minute trek to Sta. Cruz Elementary School. Equipped by a short orientation on the proper procedure on tree planting, a total of 500 seedlings of various trees were successfully planted on the hilltop overlooking Lake Buhi. After which, they joined each other for lunch which was graciously prepared for them by the barangay captain.
The tree-planting activity was spearheaded by ADNU’s Center for Community Development (CCD) and the Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research (INECAR) in partnership with the Municipality of Buhi
