Continuing Political Education: Trainers’ Training

The Ateneo de Naga University – Social Involvement Council  Committee on Socio-Political Education, Advocacy and Involvement (USIC-CSPEAI) in partnership with Pugadlawin and Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SBL) held a trainer’s training for continuing political education last 5-6 December 2009 at the La Bella Hall 1  of  Villa Caceres Hotel, Naga City.

3 modules were discussed in the said event through various presentations.

The first module was entitled “Understanding the Philippine Context” and was divided into four topics. The first topic, Challenge of Empowerment, Democratization and Engaged Citizenship was presented by Ms. Misyel Avelino of the Pugadlawin and SLB. In her presentation, Ms. Avelino stressed the “need to reclaim and rebuild the democratic center”. Mr. Ramon Beleno, III, Chair of ADNU’s Social Sciences Department discussed the second topic, Election, Human Rights and Civil Society Organizations’ Involvement. Core Values: Authentic Christian Humanism and Active Non-Violence came next and was presented by Ms. Avelino. Process of Change: Philippine Democracy, the last topic of the first module was presented by Mr. Renne Gumba, Director of ADNU’s Institute of Politics.

The second module, Electoral Process and the 2010 Elections, was divided into 3 topics. The first of which, Automation and the 2010 Elections was presented by Mr. Gumba wherein he said that “the challenge of democracy is about how involve the citizens are”. Electoral Forces was next and was presented by Mr. Beleno. After which, the floor was given back to Mr. Gumba to discuss Civil Society: Partisan, Non-Partisan and Transpartisan Involvement.

The third and last module was entitled: Planning and Commitment Session. There were three activities for the said module – Finalization of Education Modules, Strategies and Schedules and Coordination and Networking.

Participants for the event include ADNU’s administrators, representatives and students. The open forum after each topic albeit a bit prolonged from what was intended proved the participants’ eagerness and the event’s sucees.
