ADNU Institute of International Exchange
Sponsors Seminar on China

The Institute of International Exchange (IIE) and the Mandarin Language Program of the Ateneo de Naga University, in collaboration with the Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies of the Ateneo de Manila University, sponsored a one-day seminar dubbed “An Introduction to China and the Chinese” last November 17, 2007. Fr. Aristotle (Ari) Dy, S. J., the Director of the Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies, together with two distinguished professors on Chinese History, Language and Culture, Mr. Clark Alejandrino and Mr. Robin Lou Bin, presented a very comprehensive and interesting view of China.  Images of China, its people, its language as well as the business relations between China and the Philippines were discussed in the seminar.

Academic Vice President, Dr. Rebecca C. Torres, delivered the welcome address and University President, Fr. Joel E. Tabora, S.J., presented the speakers with a modest token - a basket full of “goodies” produced by ADNU students from their Income Generating Project.  Emceeing for the activity was Ms. Maria Cavagnaro, a graduate of Cornell University of the USA and a volunteer faculty member teaching Humanities and Science subjects in the university. The faculty, staff and students taking up Mandarin Language under Mr. Michael Azahar, Program Director of the Mandarin Language Program and Ms. Marlyn Tejada, delighted the audience with their rendition of several Chinese songs during the intermission.

The well attended seminar held at the ADNU Instructional Media Center (IMC) is the first among the series of activities planned to create an awareness of China and the Chinese among the members of the ADNU community. This is in preparation for the arrival of the first batch of Chinese Students by January next year who will be attending a five-month Intensive English Language Training. This is also part of the Memorandum of Agreement between ADNU and the Fujian Provincial Education Association for International Exchange.
