To fully actualize the Ateneo’s mission and vision, “men with and/or for others,” through volunteerism, camaraderie and sportsmanship, the Volunteers Organization of the Centre for Community Development (CCD- VOLTZ)–officially commenced its 1st Basketball of Leaders (B.O.L.A.) Tournament last 22 October 2009 at the Ateneo de Naga University Gymnasium. The tournament’s opening program was graced by the presence of Engr. Marlinda S. Regondola, USIC Housing Cluster Chair and Dean of the College of Engineering, Mr. Elmer T. Sto. Domingo Jr., CCD Director, Mr. Aldrin Belmes and Mr. Larry Sucatre, CCD-Voltz Moderators, and B.O.L.A. Tournament organizers. Various teams with their respective players and representatives and the CCD-Volunteers participated in the event.
The program started with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem conducted by the Ateneo de Naga University Band, followed by a message from Mr. Sto. Domingo. In his opening remarks, he extended his heartfelt gratitude to the basketball enthusiasts for their utmost support and participation in the activity. By simply giving their precious time by playing in the tournament, the player-participants helped in generating funds for the success of the 18th Bahay Atenista Project.
A video clip of the house-build, which begun last 31 July 2009 at Balatasan, Calabanga, Camarines Sur was shown. A message from Engr. Marlinda S. Regondola, USIC-Housing Cluster Chair followed. The roll-call of team-participants and Oath of Sportsmanship, which was led by a player-participant of LMIANS highlighted the event as it fully articulated the real essence of the said basketball tournament.
Mr. Aldrin Belmes, B.O.L.A. Tournament Moderator, rendered his closing remarks. The Ateneo Marching Song led by the Ateneo de Naga University Band pursued. On one hand, the traditional Ceremonial Toss with Engr. Marlinda S. Regondola and Sports Clinique with the Basketball officials concluded said event.
Meanwhile, the participating teams of this year’s B.O.L.A. Tournament are the teams Shohokoys, LSP, Engineering, Oragons (College Faculty and Staff), High School Faculty and Staff, BMHP, LMIANS, Cardinals, Ateneo Ballers, Pulang Bagting and Archers. This is, indeed, a basketball game for a cause.
