Annual Seminar Workshop:
Characteristics of Jesuit Education 2009

The Ateneo de Naga University Formation Office held its annual Seminar Workshop on The Characteristics of Jesuit Education (CJE) for New Employees last 26-28 October 2009 at the Arrupe Convention Hall. The three-day event provided an integrated exposition on the nine (9) CJE statements as well as fruitful discussions through reflection sharing.

CJE Discussions

The first day started with greetings and a brief orientation in the morning. As an introduction, the participants watched the short film "St. Ignatius and the Two Wolves." Fr. Jose Embile, S.J., College Counselor and Faculty Member, then started the discussion with a talk on Ignatian Spirituality. In the afternoon he continued with the first CJE Statement (God is Creator and Lord, the one Reality That is Absolute). Mr. Gregorio Abonal, AdNU High School Principal, proceeded with the second and third CJE Statements (Cura Personalis and Authentic Freedom).

On the second day, Dr. Allan Sioson, Dean of the College of Computer Studies, discussed the fourth and fifth CJE Statements (Christ as the Model of Human Life and Service to the Faith That Does Justice) in the morning while Fr. Ritche Elot, S.J., University Chaplain, discussed the sixth and seventh CJE statements (Service to the Church and Magis) in the afternoon.

For the last day of the workshop seminar, Dr. Rebecca Torres, Academic Vice-President, explained the eighth and ninth CJE statements (Jesuit-Lay Collaboration and Communal Discernment).

Special Sharing

In order to concretize and explain further the various CJE Statements, Q&A portions with the resource speakers and group/plenary sharing sessions were made available to the participants. Aside from the resource speakers, three (3) sharers also gave their inspiring reflections and unique experiences regarding the CJE Statements. The sharers were Dr. Ronald Elicay, Chair of the Psychology Department, (first day), Mrs. Janet Badong-Badilla, Deputy Academic Vice-President for Formation, (second day), and Dr. Rufino Ramos III, Director of the College Guidance Center, (third day).

Through this seminar workshop, the new employees (who are in their second year of working here in the Ateneo) acquire a better understanding and appreciation of the University's mission in responding God's call.
