Exchange Program on Education, Culture and Teaching Objectives (EPECTO). It was in the cloudy morning of 6 September 2009 when the neighbors of AdNU’s Liboton Apartment—also known to exchange students as the EPECTO Center—witnessed an hour’s episode of hugs and tears as Julia Ernst and Juliane Wiesinger reluctantly parted with their AdNU friends in the last minutes of their sojourn. With eyes inflamed with tears and hearts throbbing with memories, they muttered farewells to friends from yearlong Internet correspondences and newfound acquaintances from a month of socio-cultural immersion.
Julia and Juliane belonged to the fifth batch of EPECTO visitors from Friedrich-Alexander-Gymnasium and the third batch of exchange students from the same partner-institute following Konstantin Mehl (July – August 2008) and Aglaia Brütting (October 2008 – April 2009).
While here, they attended classes with selected students, delivered an Alternative Class Program (ACP) lecture on German Culture, attended the semestral German Language and Culture Course, celebrated Juliane’s eighteenth birthday, and socialized with AdNU students through meaningful conversations, numerous outdoor activities, and some culinary practices. In the course of their visit, they met Johanna Rohne, also a German volunteer linked with the President’s Office, who took them to the Gift of Love (a missionary institution caring for orphans and aged individuals).
Fond of nurturing friendly interactions, exploring new places, sharing meaningful stories, eating vegetarian cuisines and riding a pick-up truck while here, Juliane and Jule returned to Germany for their next academic term with best wishes from their Filipino friends.
