ADNU co-sponsors medical microbiology symposium:
“SKIRMISHING PATHOGENS!”
More than 200 students, teachers, and researchers from Iriga City, Legaspi City, Daet, and Naga City attended the Skirmishing Pathogens! Symposium held last April 26, 2008 at the Arrupe Convention Center of Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU). The activity was organized by the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) - Bicol Chapter, headed by its Chapter President, Dr. Michael A. Clores, and co-sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Nursing of Ateneo de Naga University.
The invited lecturers were Dr. Benjie S. Boncodin, a primary care physician of Mother Seton Hospital and St. John Hospital, Dr. Delia Ontengco, the lead microbiologist of Unilab Phils, and Dr. Esperanza C. Cabrera, a fellow at the De La Salle University-Manila. Dr. Boncodin, a medical technologist/nurse/physician, focused on the application of microbiology in the field of nursing and medicine while Dr. Ontengco shared some facts and issues about the environmental factors of emerging infections. Dr. Cabrera’s highly scientific lecture was about antimicrobial drug resistance.
“Skirmishing Pathogens!” is the third symposium that ADNU co-sponsored with the PSM. Previous symposia were Exploring the World of Microbes held last February 2007 and Meet the Mighty Microbes last September 2007.
