The Ateneo de Naga University hosted a Workshop on the General Education Curriculum (GEC) for Bicol Foundation for Higher Education (BFHE Members) last 14 January 2010 at the Arrupe Convention Hall.
Twenty-seven (27) participants coming from the Ateneo de Naga University, Universidad de Sta. Isabel (USI), University of Nueva Caceres (UNC), Bicol University (BU), Bicol College (BC), and the University of North Eastern Philippines (UNEP) gave their thoughts on the current General Education Curriculum.
The workshop aimed to review briefly the present status of the GEC; to present data on entry level competencies of college students in selected GEC; and to formulate a GEC to be submitted as proposal to the Technical Panel on General Education (TPGE) to meet the requirements of the 2-year Pre-University Curriculum for all courses. The workshop also aimed to formulate the competencies and literacies that would realize the profile of an educated Filipino citizen as described by the Philippine Constitution in particular and by the Philosophy of liberal education in general and to determine the learning areas and subjects that would realize the above competencies and literacies.
The morning session started with an invocation lead by Fr. Wilmer Tria, Chair of the Philosophy Department. Fr. Joel Tabora, S.J., University President, gave his opening remarks where he gave the background, rationale and directions of the activity. Dr. Rebecca Torres, AdNU Academic Vice-President, gave a report on the present status and concerns regarding the GEC. Ms. Cresentia Laguerta, Chair Math and Science, and Dr. Bernadette Dayan, Chair of Literature and Language Studies, provided the reality check where they discussed the preparedness of freshmen for college work.
In the afternoon, the participants were grouped in six (6) clusters: Filipino, English, Math, Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities to discuss the GEC in their respective fields. A representative from each cluster then gave comments and recommendations regarding the GEC of their assigned field. A synthesis followed afterwards.
Dr. Lydia Goingo, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Team Leader on the Committee on GEC, directed the flow of the workshop.
