Pillars of the Pedagogy

Our pedagogy in the Ateneo De Naga University embraces the timeless worldview and ideals bequeathed by St. Ignatius of Loyola and their timely re-articulation in the Characteristics of Jesuit Education. Our pedagogy is faith-inspired and rooted in the universality of the Spiritual Exercises.

The formation of the Atenean is integral, building on the God-given talents of the person. The methodology is highly interactive and adaptive of the best procedures continually emerging in the field of education. The curriculum is humanistic and values-based coupling true insight on the human being and life, and the nurturing of soulfully profitable virtues. All instruction is characterized by cura personalis stressing self-activity and mastery.

Our pedagogy forms and educates the Atenean to be competent in the service of the faith; to be upright in conscience for the promotion of justice; to be compassionately committed to inculturated change, and; to be Christ-centered and thus impelled to engage in inter-religious dialogue that enhances the faith. The pedagogy contributes substantially to the full development of the potential of the human person, and the co-creation of a more humane world.

Where information, knowledge, and science and technology (scientia) is power in a globalizing world, our pedagogy cultivates wisdom (sapientia). With freedom to choose as paramount to human dignity, our pedagogy clarifies the dialectic of life through the dynamic process of dialogue, and strengthens the Atenean's ability to discourse with eloquence (eloquentia) in proclaiming the truth. With a direct or vicarious experience of the realities of human life, especially that of poverty, our pedagogy impels discerned action on the world from a faith-perspective. When personal, institutional, national, and regional interests create oppressive societal structures that cause and further self-alienation, our pedagogy advances authentic community animated by the presence of the Spirit of Christ.

In the collaborative task of education and formation, our pedagogy enjoins us—faculty, administrators, staff and parents - to accompany the Atenean in the journey of actualizing oneself and humanity and discovering the transcendent within. In our communal journey and the collective quest for the Regnum Dei we ourselves are liberated and transformed.
