Second Call for Papers and Participation to NCITE 2008

The 6th National Conference on Information Technology Education (NCITE 2008) will be held at the University of the Philippines at Los Baņos, Laguna on October 23-24, 2008.  NCITE 2008 provides a venue to present innovative ideas, approaches, developments and results of research projects in the areas of Information Technology and Technology-based Education. The conference also promotes the exchange of information between researchers, faculty, administrators, and I.T. practitioners. NCITE 2008 is organized by the Philippine Society of I.T. Educators Incorporated (PSITE, Inc.) in cooperation with the University of the Philippines - Los Baņos and PSITE Region IV Chapter.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Martinez

Joshua C. Martinez and Maria Elena P. Lorenzo tied the knot last friday, August 8, 2008 at the Basilica Minore, Naga City.  The wedding was celebrated by Fr. Danilo B. Isidro, SJ and Fr. Arkie M. Caceres.  Congratulations to the newly wed couple!

Dr. Sioson is lecturer on Bioinformatics at the 4th Symposium on the Mathematical Aspects of Computer Science (SMACS 2008)

The 4th Symposium on the Mathematical Aspects of Computer Science (SMACS 2008) will be held at the University of the Philippines - Cebu, Lahug Campus, from August 4 to 7, 2008.  SMACS is organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines.  The symposium has two parts: 2 and a half day of Workshop (August 4 to 6) and 1 and a half day of  seminar (August 6 to 7).  Dr. Allan A. Sioson is program committee member of SMACS 2008 and will give a half day lecture and workshop on Bioinformatics on August 6, 2008.

Faculty members Rey Herman R. Vidallo and Froilan B. Rojano will join Dr. Sioson during the SMACS seminar.

Computer Graphics and Animation (CG&A) Lecture Series 2008-2009 kick off this Friday

CG&A 2008-2009 officially starts this friday, y starts this friday, August 1, 2008Mr. Raul Mimay of Nagaciti Animation Studio and Mr. Benedicto Bernardino of Camsur Animation Studio are our guest speakers in the first CG&A lecture seminar.  Mr. Mimay and Mr. Bernardino will discuss a timely lecture about the Animation Education and the Emergence of the Animation Industry in Bicol.  Fr. Danilo Isidro, SJ, and Mr. Rudyard C. Pesimo spearhead this annual activity of the Department of Digital Arts and Computer Animation. The lecture starts at 3:00pm until 6pm at Arrupe Convention Hall. Admission is free.


Dr. Caro of UP-Diliman graced PSITE Region 5 Convention; Dr. Sioson is PSITE Region 5 Chapter President

Dr. Jaime D.L. Caro is the guest speaker of the recently concluded PSITE (Philippine Society of IT Educators) Region 5 General Assembly and Convention (GAC) held at the Ritchie Fernando Hall, Ateneo de Naga last July 4, 2008.  Dr. Caro is Assistant Vice President for Development and Professor of Computer Science at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He is director of UP ITTC. He is the National President of PSITE and CSP (Computing Society of the Philippines).  He is also a member of the Technical Panel on IT Education of CHED. 

During the PSITE Region 5 GAC, Dr. Caro discussed how IT educators can help develop quality IT instruction and produce IT graduates with quality senior projects or theses. Three new trustees of PSITE Region 5 were elected: Elizabeth Macasaet of Aquinas University, Noli Lucila of Bicol University, and Engr. Alexy Gene Castillo of Mabini Colleges of Daet.  Dr. Allan A. Sioson, Dean of College of Computer Studies, Ateneo de Naga, was elected president of PSITE Region 5 for the second term. The trustees of PSITE Region 5 for School Year 2008-2009 are the following:

Dr. Albacea of UP Los Baņos is guest speaker of CDITE Region 5 General Assembly and Convention; Dr. Sioson is elected CDITE Region 5 President

Dr. Elizier Albacea is guest speaker of the CDITE (Council of Deans of IT Education, Inc.) Region 5 General Assembly and Convention held at the Ritchie Fernando Hall, Ateneo de Naga last June 23, 2008.  Dr. Albacea is Director of the Institute of Computer Science at UP Los Baņos, Laguna. He is Chair of the Technical Panel on IT Education of CHED. He is one of the only two Computer Scientists inducted as academician in the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines.

Dr. Albacea discussed the motivations and intent of CHED Memorandum Order No. 53 series of 2006 and the ladderization program being pushed by CHED in coordination with TESDA. The following are the elected members of the new board of trustees for school year 2008-2009:

New Faculty Members of the Department of Computer Science

Estrella Montealegre Aileen Rillon

The Department of Computer Science welcomes Ms. Estrella H. Montealegre and Ms. Aileen Rillon.  Ms. Montealegre holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and currently pursuing a Masters degree in Information Systems at UP Open University.  Ms. Rillion holds a Master of Business Administration degree. Ms. Rillon graduated Magna Cum Laude when she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.  Ms. Montealegre and Ms. Rillion are hired to strengthen the BS Information Systems program of the department.
