History of the College of Computer Studies
The College of Computer Studies (CCS) was officially formed on
May 24, 2001 with Atty. Manuel O. Diaz, Jr. as the first Dean.
The defunct College of Information Technology and
Engineering was divided to two independent Colleges, namely College of
Engineering and College of Computer Studies. The split highlights the difference
of curricular program offerings and research interests of the two newly formed Colleges.
The
separation of Computer Studies from Engineering encouraged development of curricular programs,
faculty, and
specialized research. The
curricular programs under the College of Computer Studies included BS Computer Science, BS Information
Management, BS Information Technology, and BS Digital Illustration and
Animation.
The Department of Digital Illustration and
Animation (DIA) was formed on
April 18, 2002. This new department administers the specialized BS DIA. The separation of DIA program from the Computer Studies
Department was initiated to enable the growth of the DIA program which demands graphics-optimized computing
facilities and requires highly-skilled and graphic arts oriented pool of faculty.
It was noted that the mainstream ITE programs, particularly Computer Science and Information Technology, are more
theory and technical-oriented. Through the leadership of Atty.
Diaz, Jr., the DIA program was empowered with an equal footing with the Computer Studies Department under the
College. As a separate independent academic department, the needs and concerns in the DIA program would
be addressed directly.
The Department of Computer
Studies was renamed Department of Computer Science and the Department of Digital Illustration and Animation
renamed the Department of Digital Arts and Computer Animation on September 5, 2002, through University
Memorandum No. 295.
The BS Information Systems program was
first
offered by the Department of Computer Science during School Year 2007-2008. This curricular program
replaced the BS Information Management program.
The BS Information Systems is technically the newer name of BS Information
Management program.
